The main activity of the company UAB “Kazlu Rudos Metalas” until 1993 was to repair “GAS” type engines for motor transport. Since 1993 the company has developed its new activity in the field of thermal engineering. The company produces boiler furnaces for bio-fuel and fittings for fuel preparation as well as supply for furnaces. At present the the production range involves equipment with a capacity of 0.5 – 15 MW, that can be mounted with water heating and steam boilers. The company has its own boiler house containing three DKVR-6.5/13 type heavy fuel oil based boilers to meet own energy needs as well as to supply the town of Kazlu Ruda with heating and hot water. Due to increased fuel prices it was decided to convert the heavy fuel oil based boiler with a boiler adapted for wood waste fuel.
One heavy fuel oil based steam boiler was converted for production of hot water using biomass fuel and a new 3.5 MW of capacity furnace that enabled to use biomass as a fuel was
provided. The furnace was produced by the company UAB “Kazlu Rudos Metalas” in cooperation with the Swedish company HOTAB. Due to reduced energy consumption in Kazlu Ruda city, the recently converted boiler covers the energy demand of the company and the city costumers.
| Manufacturer: | Kazlu Rudos Metalas, HOTAB |

| Annual energy production: | 12,600 - 16,560 GJ |
| Investment: | 2,000,000 Lt / 700,000 € |
| Distribution of costs: | Loan from NUTEK fund, scandinavian support |
| Fuel price sawdust: | 10-15 Lt/m3 |
| Fuel price wood chips: | 35 Lt/m3 |
| Energy costs: | 29.17 Lt/GJ |
| Share fuel price in energy cost: | 30.5 % |
For the conversion of the heavy fuel oil-fired boiler, adapting it for biomass fuel, was used a loan from NUTEC fund, Scandinavian countries. Investment costs were Lt 2.0 million (€ 1 = Lt 3.4528). The project payback period was 3.5 years.
The company is planning to install steam turbines of small capacity up to 300 kW also. Therefore, they see a possibility to extend the energy production using biomass fuel in their own boiler house. That would be realised by the reconstruction of another heavy fuel oil-fired boiler to adapt it for steam production to be used in a steam turbine producing electricity. Conversion of the boiler and adapting it for biomass fuel enables it to decrease energy production costs and enables to use local fuel sources. According to preliminary estimations on energy demand, fuel supply, etc. it is possible to expand energy production of environmentally friendly and economically beneficial biomass fuel provided. The furnace was produced by the company UAB “Kazlu Rudos Metalas” in cooperation with the Swedish company HOTAB. Due to reduced energy consumption in Kazlu Ruda city, the recently converted boiler covers the energy demand of the company and the city costumers.
